Major League Soccer’s long-term future beyond the Lionel Messi era has been addressed by MLS executive Alfonso Mondelo, as the league begins planning for life after its biggest global superstar.
Messi has been the defining figure of MLS since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, but league officials are already considering how to maintain global growth once the Argentine icon eventually departs.
🌍 MLS confident in life after Messi
Speaking to international media, MLS Director of Competition Alfonso Mondelo acknowledged that replacing a player of Messi’s magnitude is nearly impossible, but insisted the league has a history of evolving beyond global legends.
“It’s hard to find a player like him, but this league has already recovered from players like Cruyff and Pelé,” Mondelo said.
He added that MLS is confident it will continue attracting global talent in the future:
“I’m sure MLS will find new stars to play here.”
Messi’s current contract with Inter Miami runs until December 2028, meaning he is expected to remain in the league for several more seasons, potentially until the age of 41.
🏆 MLS long-term goal: global competitiveness
Mondelo also outlined MLS’s broader ambition to grow into one of the world’s top football leagues while first dominating the CONCACAF Champions Cup region.
“We want to be one of the great leagues worldwide in a few years’ time,” he said.
“But first we want to be the best in our CONCACAF region, competing equally with Liga MX.”
The rivalry with Liga MX remains central to MLS’s development strategy as it looks to strengthen competitiveness across North America.
⭐ Antoine Griezmann among next generation of MLS stars
As MLS prepares for its post-Messi era, new marquee signings are already shaping the league’s future.
One of the latest is Antoine Griezmann, who is set to join Orlando City SC as a major summer signing.
Mondelo confirmed that the French forward’s move had been in development for some time:
“Antoine was going to come in March, but he stayed at Atlético Madrid for the Copa del Rey and Champions League.”
He also dismissed suggestions that Griezmann’s arrival is designed to create a rivalry with Messi in Florida:
“His signing has nothing to do with creating a derby against Inter Miami. Both the club and the player are happy with the deal.”
⚽ MLS strategy: legends + youth development
MLS has traditionally grown through the signing of global football icons such as:
- David Beckham
- Thierry Henry
- Zlatan Ibrahimović
That model continues today with stars like Messi, Griezmann, and other high-profile arrivals. However, the league is now increasingly balancing that approach with investment in younger talent to improve long-term competitiveness.
A key example of this shift came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where MLS player Thiago Almada became a world champion with Argentina while playing for Atlanta United at the time.
🔥 Offside Edge Insight
MLS is entering a new phase where the challenge is no longer just attracting global icons, but building a sustainable league that can compete with Europe while maintaining worldwide appeal beyond the Messi era.
